Scale & Polish
is professional dental cleaning that involves removing plaque and tartar deposits from the teeth. Specialised hand-held tools can remove the bulk of the tartar on the teeth. After removing the majority of plaque from the surface of the teeth, particularly in between the cracks and hard-to-reach places, the next step involves polishing the teeth. A dental polish is done to remove stains and helps even out the rough texture of the teeth and minor imperfections. In addition, a regular scale and polish reduce the risk of further accumulation of plaque and should be part of a routine dental check-up.
6-month dental check-ups
should be done timeously. These check-ups remain critical to ensure you maintain optimal oral health. A dental check-up is a professional examination of the teeth. However, the need for additional treatments may be ascertained during a check-up. For example, a dentist can decide to complete deep dental cleanings, fillings, extractions, root canals or more, depending on the oral examination. The point of a dental check-up is to assess the patient’s oral health and check for signs of tooth decay or gum disease. Irregular dental visits can lead to painful and challenging oral conditions, which can be hard to treat in the long run, so these consultations must be carried out timeously.
Root canal treatments
are carried out to remove the damaged or infected pulp in the tooth. After removing the pulp, the cavity is cleaned and then filled with sealant. A root canal aims to eradicate bacteria from the affected tooth, reduce the risk of reinfection and preserve the structure of the tooth. A root canal is nothing to fear since the procedure is similar to a filling and can be done in one or two sittings. Fortunately, a root canal is a procedure to preserve the tooth to ensure efficient biting and restore bite force and the natural appearance of the tooth.
Dental restorations
are done to restore the shape, colour, spacing and function of the teeth. There exist various types of restorations to safeguard oral health and perfect bite. For example, fillings are a type of dental restoration which involves using specific materials to treat tooth decay and defects on the surface of the teeth. Dental restorations can be direct or indirect. Direct restorations involve placing different types of fillings such as glass ionomer, resin ionomer, composite/resin and dental amalgam/silver fillings. Indirect fillings include various types of dental treatments such as inlays, onlays, veneers, crowns and bridges. As a result, these forms of fillings can be made from porcelain fused to metal, gold or metal alloy components.
Bite plates for grinding/clenching (also known as night guards)
are dental appliances used to correct bites and poor biting habits like an overbite when the upper teeth protrude over the lower teeth. An orthodontic bite plate is a small acrylic device which relies on metal clasps to clip onto the upper teeth. Bite plates can be custom-made to fix onto the teeth permanently or may be removable. Removable bite plates can be worn during the day and are only taken out for cleaning. A night guard is recommended for the standard bruxer who grinds their teeth at night. Fortunately, this type of device absorbs the force produced by grinding or clenching the teeth.
Custom mouthguards for sports
conceal and protect the teeth, tongue and gums from damage due to high-impact sports. Custom sports mouthguards are designed specifically to withstand the impact of sports. Your dentist will inform you of how to care for the mouthguard, which involves washing it and finding safe storage places for the device, including the temperature it should be kept at. A mouthguard conceals the teeth, gums and tongue, preventing damage to these oral structures. For example, mouthguards are worn to reduce the risk of jaw fractures, sudden impact to the mouth and damage to the teeth and TMJ.
